Most people researching paint protection film actually want swirl-free paint and easy washing, not impact protection. Those are different problems with different answers — and different prices.
The main alternative to paint protection film is a self-healing coating, and whether it is the right alternative depends entirely on what you are protecting against. PPF is a physical urethane film, typically several thousandths of an inch thick, that absorbs rock chips and road-debris impact — no coating does that, and any shop claiming otherwise is misleading you. A self-healing coating is a chemical layer measured in microns. It cannot stop a stone, but it covers the entire vehicle rather than the panels you can afford to film, it costs substantially less, it does not have edges that can lift or yellow, and light swirls and wash marring close back up under heat from the sun. So the honest answer is: if rock chips are your problem, film the leading edges. If swirls, wash marring, gloss and chemical resistance across the whole car are your problem, a self-healing coating does more for the money. Almost everyone who calls us asking about PPF describes the same frustrations: the paint looks swirled, it is a pain to keep clean, water spots badly, and it has lost its depth. None of those are impact damage. All of them are surface problems, and film is an expensive and partial way to address them.
