We don’t repaint it.
We bring the paint back.
Original single-stage and lacquer finishes are worth saving. Before you price a respray, find out what the paint you already own will do — it is usually more than you think, and a fraction of the cost.
Classic car paint correction restores the finish that is already on the car instead of replacing it. We do not repaint vehicles and we do not run a body shop — we machine-polish existing paint back to gloss, which on an older car is very often the better outcome anyway. Original single-stage and lacquer finishes carry real value that a respray destroys permanently, and once original paint is gone it cannot be recovered. Correcting it is also dramatically cheaper than painting it. The catch is that old paint has no clear coat, so you are polishing the colour itself with far less material to work with and no sacrificial layer to hide an error. That demands paint-depth gauging on every panel, conservative compound choice, and a technician who knows when to stop. The Recon Pros has been doing this work in Southern California for decades, from our Huntington Beach studio. Correction starts at $650 and every classic is quoted after inspection.

Original paint is a one-way door.
A respray is permanent in the one direction that matters. Original paint — however tired it looks under a work light — carries value that cannot be put back once it has been sanded off. Judges know the difference, buyers know the difference, and no amount of money spent later recovers it.
Oxidised, chalky, swirled and dull are not the same as gone. A great deal of what looks like dead paint is a surface condition sitting on top of colour that is still perfectly good underneath. The honest first step is to measure it and cut a test section, which tells you in an afternoon whether you are looking at a polish or a paint job.
No clear coat means no margin for error.
Modern cars are colour under a sacrificial clear layer. Most classics and hot rods are not — you are polishing the colour itself, and every pass takes pigment.
| Capability | Modern clear-over-base | Single-stage / lacquer |
|---|---|---|
| What you're polishing | A clear sacrificial layer over the colour | The colour itself — every pass removes pigment |
| Margin for error | Clear can be cut and still leave colour untouched | Cut through and the panel needs paint. There is no undo. |
| Residue on the pad | Clear compound residue | Colour on the pad — normal, and a gauge of how hard you're cutting |
| Depth gauging | Per panel | Per panel and per section, logged, with test spots first |
| Typical age of finish | Predictable, documented systems | Unknown history — could be original, could be a 1980s respray |
| Protecting the result | Coating over clear | Coating matters more — there is no clear layer to spare |
