Light scatters against a dark background, so a defect that would be invisible on silver reads across the whole panel on a black Challenger. That makes the sequence non-negotiable: a coating is transparent and permanent for its service life, so applying one over uncorrected paint locks every existing swirl in where you will keep seeing it. What a ceramic coating does — and why we install Revivify instead.
A ceramic coating is a liquid silica (SiO2) layer that cures into a hard, glass-like film bonded to your clear coat. It does real work: strong gloss, water and dirt that release far more easily, better resistance to UV, bird droppings, bug acid and road chemicals, and a car that is genuinely quicker to wash. Those benefits are not marketing — a good ceramic delivers them, and it is a legitimate step up from wax or sealant.
The limitation of a traditional ceramic is that it cures rigid. A hard film does not flex, so it does not repair itself — the swirls your wash mitt puts in it stay, and any defect already in the paint underneath is sealed in for the life of the coating. (A few newer ceramic products add self-healing chemistry; the conventional coatings most shops install do not.) That is why The Recon Pros installs Revivify exclusively instead. Revivify is a urethane-based self-healing protective coating: it stays flexible, so light marring closes back up under heat from the sun or warm rinse water rather than accumulating.
